What Makes a Good Essay?
Well written essays do not occur by accident. They are written by individuals who have certain qualities and skills:
- A passion for the topic:
No one can write a compelling essay unless they are truly passionate.
It does not matter what type of essay is being written – descriptive, narrative, comparison/contrast, persuasive, expository, etc. – the topic itself must evoke strong feelings within the writer.

For example, film-maker Michael Moore has recently published some essays about income inequality, the greed of big banks, and the lack of quality health care for everyone. He is known for his passion about these topics, and it shows in his writing.
- Great essayists can use vocabulary that instills the emotions they want – love, anger, excitement, fear, humor, etc. They have the proverbial “way with words.”
- Great writers understand how to use sentence structure to make their points.
A short, simple sentence, for example, is the same as inserting an exclamation point. Longer sentences are used for important descriptions and allow the use of figurative language that appeals to the senses.
- The ability to organize thoughts, concepts, and points into a logical and fluent flow is tantamount to writing great essays.
- Good essay writers know their audiences well.
If you are writing a formal essay for a professor, the language and style will be quite different than that which would be written in a magazine for teen readers.
Long, Short, and In-Between
It is sometimes amusing that instructors provide a length minimum and maximum for an essay they assign, because it does not account for variances in student style.
While some may be able to cover the topic quite succinctly, and hit a “home run” with one page, others may wish to “broaden” their verbiage, and both can achieve the same impact.
There is just no general length that creates the best essays.
The shortest one ever written was less than 100 words, and the longest essay in the world so far has been 290,574 pages, written about the creation of sex – this author must have been really “into” his topic!
How to Write a Good Essay Begins with Reading
No one can become a good essay writer without reading great essays written by well-known authors.
Essays of all types should be read and studied, so that you get an idea of style, structure, and tone, based upon audience and purpose.
While you may not relate as well to the likes of Jonathan Swift, Henry Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson, you will certainly see brilliant essay writing from all three.

For both formal and informal treatments of important contemporary topics, and for a wide smattering of irony, hilarity, anger, frustration, and story-telling, give some serious thought to reading Aleksander Hemon, Joan Didion, Geoff Dyer, or Jo Ann Bead.
Some of the best American essays you might want to read are:
- “Consider the Lobster” by David Wallace
- “The Difference between Day and Night Shoppers” by Erma Bombeck
- “The Search for Marvin Gardens” by John McPhee
- “Notes of a Native Son” by James Baldwin
- “Frank Sinatra Has a Cold” by Gay Talese
All of the essay writers mentioned above have, in addition to singular popular essays, some of the best essay collections to be found.
The Best Essay Topics Make the Best Essays!
Unfortunately, we cannot always choose our essay topic, audience, or purpose, for they are selected by instructors.
Great English teachers and professors, however, will choose a purpose (explanatory, descriptive, narrative, persuasive etc.) and allow students to pick their own topics within the required purpose.
Finding a topic about which you are passionate is 50% of the road to writing the best essay ever.
If, for example, you are asked to write a narrative, pick something from your own life – an event or incident that was hilarious, tragic, or highly meaningful.
If you need to write a persuasive essay, then choose an issue about which you have strong feelings – great inspirational essays come from passion and strong feelings!.
Brainstorming and Outlining Cannot be Under-Estimated!
When you have your topic, your purpose, and identified audience, you are ready to begin your thought organizations.
Begin by throwing down on paper every thought you have about the topic. Combine, eliminate, and add over a period of time, with breaks in between. Make a rough outline that determines the sequence in which you will cover your points.
Great essays always start with a map!
The Rough Draft/Revision/Final Piece
Using your outline, prepare a rough draft.
Don’t worry too much about spelling and mechanics at this point – focus instead on your style and your language.
Start your introduction with a short “snappy” sentence that hooks your reader. Develop each of your body paragraphs with a solid topic sentence and compelling supporting detail. Your conclusion should not just wrap up your thoughts – it should make your reader remember what you have said.
Proofreading and revising should probably be done by someone else, because it is hard to catch one’s own errors. (khm, think of one of our professional editors, maybe?)
If you have to do your own, though, put the thing away for a while and come back to it!
